Student Visas for Germany (German: Studentenvisum für Deutschland)
There are 2 types of student visas for Germany:
Language Course Visa (German: Sprachkursvisum)
For all university applications in Germany as a foreigner, you need to pass first a German language test like the DSH examination (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang). This is a university examination, which checks your exact German language level. To pass this exam, typically, foreign students attend first a language school or DSH course in Germany for about 6 to 10 months.
If you plan to visit first a German language school in Germany, please apply in the embassy for a Language Course Visa (Sprachkursvisum). This visa is temporary, normally between 6 and 24 months, and cannot be converted into a student visa. In the embassy, you will be asked for a health insurance policy for the whole period of time. Please prepare and apply for the insurance policy before visiting the German Embassy. Some German insurance companies provide special rates only for language students, starting at EUR 28.00 / month.

Student Visa / Visa for Educational Purposes (German: Visum zu Studienzwecken)
Once you gain your university or high school admission (German: Zulassung), you can get a Student Visa. This Visa is issued normally for 1 or 2 years and can be extended for the period of your study in Germany.
German Visa Exceptions:
To enter Germany, normally, you need a Visa (German: Visum).
Exceptions are all citizens of the European Union (EU) and all nationals of Australia, Canada, South Korea, Israel, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino, Honduras, Switzerland, and the USA - they don't need a visa for Germany. Please contact the German "Auswärtiges Amt" to get the most up-to-date information about visa requirements.
If you need Health Insurance in the Embassy or Ausländerbehörde:
For all international students in Germany, who need to show Health Insurance in the Embassy or Ausländerbehörde to get or extend their visa, we recommend the tariff from the Hanse-Merkur Versicherungsgruppe starting at only EUR 28.00 / month.
