Student Visas for Germany (Studentenvisum für Deutschland)

There are 2 types of student visas (visum) for Germany:

Language Course Visa (Sprachkursvisum)

For all university applications in Germany as foreigner you need to pass first a german language test like for example the DSH examination (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang). This is an university examination, which checks your exact german language level. To pass this exam, typically foreign students attend first a language school or DSH course in Germany for about 6 to 10 months.

If you plan to visit first a german language school in Germany, please apply in the embassy for a Language Course Visa (Sprachkursvisum). This visa is temporary, normally between 6 and 24 months and cannot be converted into a student visa. In the embassy you will be asked also for a health insurance policy for the whole period of time. Please prepare and apply for the insurance policy before visiting the german Embassy. Some german insurance companies provide special rates only for language students, starting only from 28 Euro / month.
Please see details here.

Student Visa (Visum zu Studienzwecken or Visa for educational purposes)

Once you gain your university or high school admission (Zulassung) you can get a Student Visa. This Visa is issued normally for a period of 1 or 2 years and can be extended for the period of your study in Germany.

Visa/Visum Exceptions:

To enter Germany you need a Visa (Visum).

Exceptions are all Citizens of the European Union(Eu) and all nationals of Australia, Canada, South Korea, Israel, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino, Honduras, Switzerland and the USA: they don't need a visa for Germany.
